Magnetic surgical mat: reliable instrument holding, even on inclined surfaces

In the operating room, keeping instruments within reach without the risk of them sliding or falling is a real time- and safety-saver for the whole team.

This surgical mat meets that need with its magnetic version: its medical-grade silicone surface integrates magnets that firmly hold forceps, scissors and other metal instruments, even on an inclined plane or a contoured surface. The team keeps immediate, safe access to instruments while reducing the risk of drops.

Features

The mat is made of medical-grade silicone, designed to withstand operating room constraints while remaining easy to maintain. Its smooth surface cleans quickly between uses.

Instrument retention relies on magnets integrated into the mat structure. Unlike a simple anti-slip surface, magnetic attraction provides stable holding even when the mat conforms to an inclined or irregular shape, making it especially useful when space is limited.

It is a reusable device, designed to withstand many use cycles over the course of procedures.

Use as a neutral zone

The neutral zone designates a defined location on the sterile field, where the sharp or pointed instrument is placed by one person and then picked up by the other, without hand-to-hand transfer. Operating room practice standards describe several possible implementations: a kidney dish, an instrument tray or a mat. Two rules apply whichever device is used: only one sharp instrument at a time in the zone, and a verbal announcement at each placement, with the hand fully withdrawn.

The magnetic mat has the advantage of holding the instrument exactly where it was placed, including when the field is inclined or contoured, and of moving with the field if the team's position changes.

Use and sterilization

The magnetic mat is supplied non-sterile. Before each use, it must be cleaned, sterilized and thoroughly dried, just like the other instruments on the operating tray. Its autoclave resistance allows it to be integrated directly into the standard sterilization cycle, without special handling. Flexible, it can be rolled and placed in the instrument tray to go through sterilization with the instruments it will hold.

Precaution in MRI environments

This model is classified MR Unsafe: the presence of magnets in its structure makes it incompatible with MRI environments. It is therefore reserved for procedures carried out outside MRI suites.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. It is supplied non-sterile and must be cleaned, sterilized and dried before each use, like the rest of the instrumentation.

No, this model is classified MR Unsafe due to its integrated magnets. It must not be used near MRI equipment.

It is cleaned and sterilized according to the operating room's standard protocol, then dried before use. Its autoclave resistance allows it to be included in the same cycle as the instruments it will hold.

Yes, it is designed for repeated use over multiple procedure and sterilization cycles.

Its smooth, non-porous medical silicone surface is easy to clean, which simplifies maintenance between procedures.

Yes. It is one of the supports that can be used to materialize a neutral zone on the sterile field, just like a kidney dish or an instrument tray. The mat does not replace the protocol: only one sharp instrument at a time, and a verbal announcement at each placement.
